the wonderful em forster describes cavafy as a Greek gentleman in a straw hat standing absolutely motionless at a slight angle to the universe and it's impossible to sum up this man and his astounding body of work in any other way

At a straight well angle from reflexive experience leading from then to then through History in a strange manipulation of Time to bring together a set of fixed yet loose sometimes lost sensations This collection of poems travels across the human dimension weaving classical History with the contemporary void correcting the present with its memories of the past It is as if Cavafy has lived through all the ages he writes odes ofto known all the individual men uoted brought always some sort of accumulated wisdom with him until the moment of writing etching in stone the uasi mythical reality of centuries past He is a man caressing a tombstone led as much by the beauty of the monument as by the body buried beneath it A probable influence on Yourcenar and Borges An important read for all lovers of History

Best translation out there and –unlike the 1984 translation– here the Greek original has polytonic spelling

I’m absolutely in love with ‘Waiting for the barbarians’ it’s so concise and so accurate I laughed out loud at the end of the poem so spot on it isI’m impressed with Cavafy’s deep historical knowledge how he’s creating an air of antiuity in his works so that at some point one even begins to sympathise Anthony who’s forsaken by GodAnd Cavafy’s non historical poems is sheer amazement I never suspected this kind of honest poetry exists for already so long and it’s beautiful

“Remember body” will always be my favorite poem of his Cavafy’s poetry is strangely sensual his way of writing is at its best when he’s being erotic or ironic and he is definitely one of my favorite poets I’m beyond happy that I finally read his full collection and I will be going back to it every now and then
